Case Study: Patented Medical Table Joint

AFD was approached by Multi-Ply (medical equipment OEM) to support in the development of a medical imaging table. The engineering challenge and task objective was to derive a unique table joint for a split table design that would be simple to use and manufacture.

The AFD team has created a unique table joint that is now patented and structurally safe. This is AFD’s first patent and marks a significant milestone in our dedication and innovation. This experience has increased our competitive advantage through protecting our designs.

Through rapid prototyping, AFD was able to create mock-up models and the removeable table prototype using additive manufacturing. This mock-up was later demonstrated at overseas trade shows. Due to the high precision needed within the design, mock-up models were produced to ensure the design would meet the form and function as the finished component.

Stress analysis was undertaken during the design phrase to ensure that the medical table joint would support the required forces. This minimised any destructive, physical testing required.
