Case Study: AIRBUS H135 Human External Cargo Static Basket Type 4C

Introduction

Airframe Designs was tasked by Airbus to perform a stress analysis for the Type 4C Basket. This basket is a static basket which is designed to be carried below a helicopter to powerlines. When at powerlines, the basket can be detached from the helicopter and attached to the powerlines. This basket can then be used for maintenance and repair of the powerline without the need of a helicopter. This means the helicopter can collect the basket at another time as it will no longer need to be attached.

Construction

This particular basket is formed from welded steel tubes and relies on 4 roller boxes to support the payload when either on or off a powerline. This allows the basket to be used for the transport of equipment and human operators.

Regulations

EASA impose specially written regulations for carrying human external cargo beneath helicopters. Due to this, the design would need to withstand higher criteria and would require more evaluation before it could be put into use.

Through carefully defining where and how the operator uses the load carrying system, AFD was able to simplify the certification process by categorising most of the baskets structure as none human external cargo (NHEC).
